Questions and Answers
Learn how modern driver assistance systems, vehicle software, calibration, and autonomous technology affect today’s drivers.
What is Ford Co-Pilot360?
Ford Co-Pilot360 is a collection of driver assistance features designed to help improve awareness and safety. Depending on the vehicle, it may include automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alerts, and pre-collision assistance.
How does automatic emergency braking work?
The system monitors the road ahead and can warn the driver when it detects a possible collision. If the driver does not react quickly enough, the vehicle may automatically apply the brakes.
What does a blind spot monitoring system do?
Blind spot monitoring alerts the driver when another vehicle is detected in an area that may be difficult to see. Cross traffic alerts can also warn about vehicles, bicycles, or other objects approaching while the driver is backing up.
Is Ford BlueCruise a fully autonomous driving system?
No. BlueCruise is a hands-free driver assistance system for approved roadways, but the driver must remain attentive. A camera monitors the driver and can issue warnings or disengage the system if the driver looks away for too long.
Can BlueCruise make long trips less tiring?
The guests described BlueCruise as helpful for reducing leg, arm, and body fatigue during long highway trips. It can manage steering, speed, lane position, and following distance while the driver continues watching the road.
Why do modern vehicle parts sometimes need programming?
Many replacement parts must communicate with the vehicle’s computer systems before they will operate correctly. Technicians may need to perform software updates, programming, relearns, or initialization procedures after installation.
Why is ADAS calibration important after a repair?
Cameras, radar sensors, and other driver assistance components must be properly aligned to work correctly. Repairs involving a collision, windshield replacement, suspension changes, or sensor replacement may require calibration.
Can larger tires or a lift kit affect driver assistance systems?
Yes. Changes to tire size or vehicle ride height can affect how cameras and sensors read the road. The vehicle may need recalibration, and some modifications could also affect extended warranty coverage.
Why is there a shortage of automotive technicians?
Today’s vehicles require knowledge of both mechanical systems and advanced computer technology. The guests explained that the industry needs more trained technicians and additional technical education programs to meet growing demand.
What was the show’s experience with a driverless Waymo ride?
The ride was described as smooth, simple, and comfortable once the passenger learned how to unlock and start the vehicle through the app. The vehicle monitored surrounding traffic, provided trip updates, and completed the ride without a human driver.
